The New Kings of Journalism: Bezos and Omidyar
It was recently reported that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post, the newspaper responsible for uncovering the Watergate Scandal and this summer disclosed reports about the NSA's surveillance programs. Now eBay founder Pierre Omidyar will be launching a major news organization with independent journalists, Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras. Omidyar's goals for the digital news outlet are focused on "asking tough questions on behalf of the public to make this community a better place." Interestingly, running a news organization is actually nothing new to Omidyar who started Honolulu Civil Beat, a digital outlet concentrated on a return to the fundamentals of journalism: shoe-leather reporting, an emphasis on filing Freedom of Information Act requests and examining public records, close coverage of government spending and campaign finance.
